The Alba Iulia type

This reconstruction is highly speculative and is based on only one sculptural representation, found at Alba Iulia (ROM). However, it is clear that the articulated plates of the upper sections have been replaced with scale armour and that the armour was fastened at the front with breastplates. We do not know how large the scales were, nor whether they were ferrous or copper alloy. In fact, all of the components for armour of this type are already known from Roman sites – it may just be that we have never recognised them for what they are. The main period of use of the Alba Iulia type is unknown but may have been the 2nd and 3rd centuries A.D.
